(Belgrade, December 4th, 2017) Implementation of the project for the construction of flue gas desulphurization plant in Thermal Power Plant Nikola Tesla A started with the kick-off meeting attended by the representatives of Electric Power Industry of Serbia and contractors led by the Japanese company Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems. EUR 167.2 million flue gas desulphurization system on four units in TENT A with over 300 MW capacity will reduce sulphur dioxide emission by nine times, from approximately 74,000 tons to 7,800 tons annually.
- We have started the implementation of the project that provides the future for TENT A and harmonization with European environmental standards. The construction of the desulphurization plant in the largest Serbian power plant is just one of EPS' projects that is placing it among the most developed power companies in Europe. Our commitment is to save all inherited generation and distribution capacities, to improve and modernize them, and bring them closer to EU – said Milorad Grčić, PE EPS Acting Director at the meeting in TENT A.
Grčić said that TENT B desulphurization project is also in the preparatory phase and he added that revitalization is planned for the two oldest units in TENT A – A1 and A2, and that after that they will be as good as new and by 40 MW stronger.
- EPS started with the construction of 350 MW thermal unit Kostolac B3, it is modernizing hydro capacities, and next year it will start with the construction of 66 MW wind farm in Kostolac in which it will invest about 100 million euros. Activities related to the opening of the new mine Radljevo in MB Kolubara are intensified, and coal production in this mine should start in 2019. That is just a part of the activities we have started and what we plan for the next few years – emphasized Grčić.
Aleksandar Antić, the Minister of Mining and Energy in Serbia said that the completion of desulphurization plant construction is planned for the last quarter of 2022 as part of the efforts invested by EPS and Serbia for the fulfillment of EU environmental commitments.
- TENT A annually generates about 10 billion kWh, which means that with this desulphurization project we protect and keep the third of electricity generation in Serbia, i.e. we are securing its continuation even after 2023, and we are making our power system secure. Serbian Government and EPS are in the midst of the most important investment period in the last 30 years and I believe even more important things are ahead of us. EPS investments make the largest share in three billion worth of projects currently implemented in Serbian energy sector and they will rise in the next year and a half to four or five billion euros – said Antić.
Hideto Kawata, representative of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems said that the share of Serbian companies in project will exceed 50 percent and added that the objective of the project is to contribute to environmental protection in Serbia and local economy development.
