(Belgrade, 28th February 2017) Public Enterpize Electric Power Industry of Serbia and Environmental Protection Agency signed the agreement on long-term business and technical cooperation. The Contract was signed by Mr. Milorad Grcic, PE EPS Acting Director and Mr. Filip Radovic, Environmental Protection Agency Director.
- Signing of this agreement is another huge step that leads EPS towards more modern and efficient company and leads EPS into the safe and better future. Up to now, EPS has invested more than EUR 200 million in environmental protection and it plans to invest another billion euros in the following nine years. It clearly shows that EPS continues the restructuring process and in accordance with the policy of the Serbian Government it is moving steadily forward – said Mr. Milorad Grcic, PE EPS Acting Director.
Based on the Agreement, the Agency and EPS will cooperate on the monitoring of air, water, land, waste and also noise level, non-ionizing radiation and other environmental impacts in the vicinity of EPS power plants and distribution facilities. Regular assessment of the results of the measures for environmental pollution reduction and prevention is foreseen as well.
- Today EPS and the Environmental Protection Agency become strategically connected. This Agreement will not represent just the formality but we will jointly strive to determine what we can do in order to make the production more efficient but also to have cleaner and healthier environment. Investing in environment is never a cost but an investment in better future – said Mr. Filip Radovic, Director of Environmental Protection Agency.
Through the cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency, EPS fulfills the restructuring program supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and it implements the provisions of Environmental and Social Action Plan. Action Plan has been harmonized with the EBRD environmental protection and social policy and it should bring the best international practice and promote the results within the fields of environmental protection, social issues and occupational health and safety.
Mr. Daniel Berg, EBRD Director for Serbia pointed out the the bank has worked with EPS for nearly 20 years on the projects within mining, electricity generation and distribution and most recently in supporting EPS in the company restructuring.
- We particularly appreciate the support of the Government of Serbia and EPS Management as we have worked with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank to forward the structural reforms required to make EPS a more efficient company. Key element in the most project was the improvement of environmental protection. Start of the cooperation between EPS and Environmental Protection Agency is an example of EPS’ commitment and openness to work on new ideas – said Mr. Daniel Berg, EBRD Director for Serbia.
