Implementation of the Environmental Plan is synchronized with the implementation of investment plans, maintenance and scientific research, and required financial resources are within these plans.
To meet the standards of the European Union, PE EPS must invest EUR 1.2 billion in environmental protection in the period up to 2015. Already defined programs in this area are related to: reduction of sulfur oxide emissions by installing flue gas desulphurization facilities at thermal power plants, reduction of nitrogen oxides emissions in the air by introducing primary measures, reconstruction or replacement of the existing electrostatic precipitator, replacement of the fuel used by CHP by fuel with lower emission hazardous substances coefficient, preparation of pollutants cadastre, cleaning of riverbeds and dealing with floating waste, support of the use of renewable energy sources (mini hydro power plants), treatment of oily wastewater of PE EPS facilities, as well as land reclamation (seedlings, afforestation).
In the period up to 2015, the following activities are foreseen:
Strategy and environmental policy preparation; optimization of the total harmful substance emissions reduction from PE EPS thermal power plants; projects for the introduction of new technologies to reduce environmental impact; monitoring the development of national and international regulations concerning environmental protection; preparation of air, water, land and waste pollutants cadastre; introduction of an integrated system for continuous monitoring of the environment; improvement of the organization and systems of environmental management in the company; solving the problem of hazardous and toxic substances and use of waste and by-products, resulting from facility operation as secondary raw materials; at the level of Public Enterprise, project “Development of Environmental Management System“ shall be implemented in the following period, as well as analysis and generation of additional financial gains due to reduction of CО2 emissions from PE EPS power plants.
- Production and processing of coal
The development and introduction of new technologies for selective mining of immediate roof (the use of materials of immediate roof and underlying seam as non-metallic minerals); reclamation of overburden dumps; the protection of regime and quality of groundwater and surface water and soil around the mine; the protection of the environment from emissions (gases, dust and noise), the protection in coal processing.

- Thermal power plants and combined and heat power plants
Monitoring, emissions reduction and air quality improvement: reconstruction of electrostatic precipitators in accordance with legal regulations, the implementation of primary measures to reduce concentration of nitrogen oxides in flue gases, in accordance with legal regulations on the units being rehabilitated as well as the introduction of flue gas desulphurization facilities at TPP in accordance with legal regulations; monitoring work on increasing production efficiency (reduction of specific consumption) in terms of environmental protection, as well as supporting programs of heating from thermal power plants; improving existing and introducing new ash and slag handling technologies, as well as the reclamation of ash dumps in accordance with the special program; reduction of the amount of wastewater and discharged water quality control, groundwater protection by introducing new technologies for ash transport and disposal, as well as the development of water curtains of wells around dumps and construction of wastewater treatment facilities; introduction of the use of ash and slag in the cement industry, construction industry, road construction and the like.
Monitoring, evaluation and analysis of regime and water quality (accumulations, water flows, groundwater), as well as sediment regimes and quality; erosion, flow, sediment, ice and flood protection; riparian area protection; special protection measures of riparian area of Đerdap power plants system, with realization of “Programme for monitoring, evaluation and analysis of the impact of backwater of Danube on riparian area caused by the construction and exploitation of Đerdap I and Đerdap II systems“, as well as the cooperation with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River.
