The success of EPS operations largely depends on the connection and cooperation with the surrounding power systems. Therefore there are certain requirements to be met by the telecommunication network to be able to exchange data when controlling the power systems. Some of these requirements are defined in the document "Teleinformation System Among National Dispatch of SECI Countries", that covers the connection of national dispatch centres of SE Europe countries, in order to create a single electricity market.
PE EPS telecommunication network is connected with the networks of neighbouring countries through optical ground wire cable (OPGW), placed on interconnective lines, with synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) transmission systems. In further development of the network it has been extended to be able to transmit technical and business data for the requirements of electric power industry.
By the end of 2010, total amount of approx. 5 000 km of optic network was installed on 400, 220, 110 and 35kV high voltage transmission lines of power system of the Republic of Serbia.
The terminal equipment of synchronous digital hierarchy is installed in more than 70 electric power and distribution facilities of Electric Power Industry of Serbia and Serbian Transmission System and Market Operator, which uses optical fibers in OPGW as a transmission medium.
Using this optical SDH network, the foundation of IP/MPLS network iwas set up, as a basis for multi-service electric power IP network, with the first service which refers to the voice transmission.
The capacity of the installed fiber optic cables exceeds the needs that are posed by the electric power system and represents a good basis for participation at the free telecommunication market.
