Public enterprise "Electric Power
Industry of Serbia" has successfully built a system for reducing nitrogen
oxides on unit A4 of the Thermal Power Plant "Nikola Tesla A" in
Obrenovac, the largest electricity factory in the Balkans, thus reducing
nitrogen oxide emissions in accordance with legal regulations - below 200
milligrams per cubic meter. The presentation of the completion of another in a
series of environmental projects of PE EPS was attended by Sam Fabrizi,
Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar
Antić, Minister of Mining and Energy in the Government of Serbia, Marko
Jovanović, Assistant Minister of Finance in the Government of Serbia, and
Milorad Grčić, Acting Director of PE EPS.
The total value of the works and
equipment is around 8.5 million euros, of which the EU provided about 80
percent of the funds from the IPA 2014 fund.
Antić congratulated on the
successfully realized project, which, he says, is a significant part of the
overall efforts that Serbia and EPS are making in order to modernize the
electric power system, become more efficient, and according to the highest standards
in environmental protection.
- TPPNT is a key pillar of our electricity
system that produces 50 percent of the total electricity in Serbia, and the
energy system of our country is a key factor in the stability of the energy
sector in the region. Our strategic goal and all those who wish the region well
is for the production of electricity in Serbia to be stable and based on the highest
EU standards - said Antić and thanked the EU for its support in the
implementation of projects in the field of environmental protection.
Milorad Grčić, Acting Director of PE EPS said
that the project of building a system for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions in
unit A4 is one of the key environmental projects that guarantees the survival
of TPPNT.
- The goal is to bring every EPS plant
to a satisfactory environmental level. We want to harmonize with the EU
regulations - said Grčić and reminded that about 10 days ago, the cornerstone
was laid for a plant that should reduce the emission of sulfur particles.
- In parallel, we are modernizing and
revitalizing units at all hydropower plants. It remains for us to continue the
modernization of production in open cast mines - in Kolubara and Kostolac.
During this year, we will complete the project of coal quality management at
the Tamnava mines - Grčić added.
The EU says that they will continue the partnership with Serbia in the
realization of important projects in the field of environmental protection. Sam
Fabrizi, Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia,
said that Chapters 15 and 27, which refer to ecology, are important for Serbia
in the negotiations on EU membership, and that there is still work to be done.
- The EU will provide assistance to Serbia and
be on its side - told Fabrizi.
