Rehabilitation of Unit 2 in HPP Djerdap 1completed successfully

Great and significant work was completed for Electric Power Industry of Serbia and for stability of power system by commissioning the rehabilitated Unit 2 in HPP Djerdap 1, therefore making the greatest Serbian hydropower plant stronger by 30 megawatts.

- EPS and HPP Djerdap 1 now have five out of six units, as good as new. We are to refurbish one more unit and we will start that work in 2020. After we finish this and repair the stilling basin, we will be able to say that we now have Djerdap 1 as if it had just been built – said Mr. Milorad Grčić, Acting Director of PE EPS after the fifth phase of rehabilitation of units in the hydropower plant in Kladovo had been finished.

Mr. Grčić added that this is our obligation and a policy of the President of Serbia, Mr. Aleksandar Vučić, to preserve everything we inherited, but also to modernize it and leave it to future generations.

- EPS has a serious plan to considerably increase an investment level in 2020 – noted Mr. Grčić and announced a complete rehabilitation of 10 units in HPP Djerdap 2, in cooperation with the Russian company Silovije Mashini, by which EPS will get additional 50 megawatts.

Mr. Aleksandar Antić, a Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia, said that Djerdap 1 is the greatest treasure of Serbia.

- Rehabilitations that are completed, have ensured that these units have a new life cycle for the coming four decades – noted Mr. Antić and added that Djerdap 1 is of high importance for the Serbian power system because it produces more than a half of hydropower in Serbia.

HPP Djerdap, for 47 years of its operation, has produced electricity in value of about 14 billion euro, while one unit annually produces kilowatt hours valued between 40 and 50 million euro.  When rehabilitation of the sixth unit is completed, HPP Djerdap will have more capacity by 180 megawatts in total for producing clean electricity.

Mr. Aleksandar Botzan-Harchenko, a Russian Ambassador in Belgrade concluded that commissioning the fifth unit showed that rehabilitation was going as planned and that there were no stagnations.

- This is a result of joint action by professionals from the Silovije Mashini company, one of the most distinguished and most professional in Russia and professionals in Serbia. Putting the new unit into operation is done during intensive political contacts at the top level of Russia and Serbia. With political contacts and intensive dialogue, we have practical implementation of what we agree about – said the Ambassador.

After commissioning the fifth unit, the delegation, led by the Russian Ambassador, laid the flowers onto the Serbian and Russian soldiers’ monument in Kladovo.
