The goal of the Electric
Power Industry of Serbia (EPS) is to maintain a large share in the electricity
market and in production and supply, which will not be an easy task. The key is
the way in which the relationship will be set up with independent electricity
producers who are looking for their place in the market and who are on one side,
while on the other side there are energy companies such as EPS, which are less
privileged, and at the same time are key to energy security during the energy
transition," said Dušan Živković, General Manager of EPS at the panel at
the RES Serbia 2025 conference.
He pointed out that EPS
is following the path of transition and confirms this with new projects,
primarily strategic ones, such as the pumped-storage hydro power plant
Bistrica, which is crucial for a larger share of RES in the future, as well as
the project of 1 GW of solar power plants with battery storage.
- Without new
production capacities, primarily the Bistrica Hydro Power Plant and 1 GW of
solar, the company's development would be endangered, while at the same time
Serbia's energy security would be in the hands of independent energy producers
and traders.
He added that the first
megawatts from the first wind farm of EPS in Kostolac will soon be on the grid
and reiterated that EPS wants to contribute to the energy transition and the
set goals. Therefore, it is extremely important to meet the deadlines for the
implementation of the project.
- We have made important
business decisions with this goal in mind, to move forward boldly, to try to
maintain a large share of the market both when it comes to production and when
it comes to electricity supply. We also have both knowledge and expertise, the
readiness to introduce new technologies, and we need more determination and
courage to make strategic decisions that will keep the entire energy sector of
Serbia, and thus EPS, in a leading position in the region and beyond. I am truly
convinced of that – said Živković.
