Renewable Energy Sources

In accordance with the strategic documents for energy sector development of the Republic of Serbia, as well as with its own development aims, one of the most important goals of „Elektroprivreda Srbije” is the continuation of activities on the increase of electricity generation share from renewable energy sources. As one of the most influential companies in electricity generation in the region, PE EPS  has opted for the implementation of top-notch technologies in the field of renewable energy sources utilization, increase of utilization rate and economically justifiable and sustainable development of the energy sector, based primarily on water resources.

Therefore, one of Elektroprivreda Srbije’s priority is the continuation of activities on the projects of revitalization and modernization of existing large and small HPPs, construction of new small HPPs, construction of wind farms and photovoltaic power plants, as well as the municipal solid waste combustion plant and biomass usage, for which possible locations are being analyzed.

In order to achieve the set goals, „Elektroprivreda Srbije” has chosen to, as needed, engage its resources for the utilization of hydro power potential of all watercourses where an interest to construct hydro power plants exists, whether on the locations already owned by EPS or in their close proximity.

Hence, it is important to emphasize that „Elektroprivreda Srbije” does not conduct the activities of designing, consulting or providing any sort of services in this field, so that all research and analysis of the renewable energy sources potential are conducted exclusively for own needs, but also taking into consideration the possibility of partnership in the development and implementation of certain projects.

Another important segment, becoming more and more important and recognized as one of the priorities in the National Sustainable Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia is energy efficiency. Since „Elektroprivreda Srbije” has already recognized energy efficiency as important element of its energy policy, significant activities have already been undertaken and, in accordance with its jurisdiction, „Elektroprivreda Srbije” has significantly improved energy efficiency of its capacities of electricity generation and distribution and created the conditions to make it a permanent process. In the upcoming period, there are big expectations both in the field of improvement of energy efficiency and energy consumption.

As a responsible company, in order to continue with further activities on the advancement of energy efficiency, „Elektroprivreda Srbije” initiated the implementation of the study “Analysis of the potential and organized monitoring program and advancement of energy efficiency in coal production and generation and distribution of electricity and heating energy” with the aim of overviewing energy efficiency in all „Elektroprivreda Srbije’s activities. By completing the study, the foundation will be laid out for introducing the energy management system (ISO 50001) at the level of the whole company, which would create the conditions for efficient operation and timely settling of liabilities arising from the Law on Efficient Use of Energy.

By implementing these activities, conditions will be created for:

           sources diversification

increasing the security of energy supply and its efficient use

           improving competition

reduction of adverse environmental impact and

           encouraging responsible energy behavior.

Hydro power:

When it comes to large hydro power plants, it is important to state that the following revitalizations have been completed:

• Ovčar banja and Međuvršje HPP,

• Bajina Bašta HPP,

And that the following revitalizations are ongoing:

• Đerdap 1 HPP,

• Zvornik HPP

• 15 small hydro power plants owned by „Elektroprivreda Srbije”,

As well as the construction of:

• 2 new SHPPs at water supply reservoirs.

Additionally, as part of the extension of life cycle and increasing the efficiency of existing hydro power plants, the following revitalizations are planned for the upcoming period, for which technical documentation is currently under preparation:

• Vlasinske HPP

• Bistrica HPP

• Potpeć HPP

• Bajina Bašta PS HPP,

In order to additionaly increase electricity generation from renewable sources, certain preparatory activities have been initiated on the construction of new generation capacities with prospective partners, and we are currently investigating the possibility of the construction of new hydro power plants within the following projects:

• Ibarske HPP Project

• Komarnica HPP Project

• Moravske HPP Project

• Bistrica PS HPP Project

• Project on the construction of 4 units in Potpeć HPP

• 5 SHPPs at water supply reservoirs.

Wind power:

Under the feasibility study for windfarm construction at Kostolac location, having the installed capacity of approximately 66 MW, and by securing the sources of funding, the conditions for the implementation of the project for construction of the windfarm at the said location have been created.

Solar power:

Under the feasibility study for the construction of Kostolac photovoltaic power plant, having the installed capacity up to 10 MW, and by securing the sources of funding, the conditions for the implementation of the project for construction of the photovoltaic power plant at the said location have been created.

Taking into consideration other prospective projects, it should be mentioned that drafting of the necessary documentation for the construction of photovoltaic power plant at the location of Srednje kostolačko ostrvo with the capacity of approximately 100 MW is currently ongoing.
