The newly built cassette 4 at the ash and slag dump site at the “Nikola Tesla A” thermal power plant, which is in trial operation as of today, is a confirmation of a clear commitment of “Elektroprivreda Srbije“ that all our production facilities comply with strict environmental protection measures – said Dušan Živković, General Manager of “Elektroprivreda Srbije“, after the cassette 4 is put into trial operation
He emphasized that it is crucial that the most modern technologies and environmental protection standards of the European Union have been applied to this cassette.
- Cassette 4 is the largest ash and slag disposal cassette within EPS and is an example of an ecological way of disposing of by-products in thermal energy generation. By investing in environmental protection projects, we ensure the security of our base energy generation in the future and lay a solid foundation for EPS to continue to be an energy leader in innovation and modernization, especially in times of energy transition and decarbonization – said Živković.
Milan Aleksić, Advisor to the Minister of Mining and Energy, emphasized that improving environmental protection in the energy sector is a state priority so that, in addition to energy security and safety, strict environmental requirements are also ensured.
- Investments in environmental protection are necessary in order to fully harmonize our energy sector with European and global regulations and standards. These are large investments, measured in hundreds of millions of euros, but each project brings better conditions for the protection of air, water, and soil. Last year, a desulfurization plant began operating at TENT A, a similar one is being completed at TENT B, and cassette 4 is an important link in the operation of our largest thermal power plant – said Aleksić.
The project is worth EUR 45 million. Cassette 4 covers 115 hectares, and a 35-hectare green protection belt is being formed around it. In addition to the existing method of ash and slag disposal, it will also be prepared for the future storage of a dense hydro mix of ash and slag. The strictest environmental regulations were applied to this project and accordingly two types of foils were installed, bentonite and high-density polyethylene, each with an area of 1.3 million square meters. The Preliminary Design, Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Assessment Study were carried out by the Mining Institute in Belgrade, and the Construction Permit and Implementation Design were carried out by the Institute of Water Management “Jaroslav Černi”.
Cassette 4 was also visited by Radoš Popadić, Assistant Minister of Mining and Energy and all members of the Executive Board of EPS JSC.
