Ten times lower SO2 emission, gypsum as byproduct

Desulphurization plant covering four units of Nikola Tesla A thermal power plant is now in a 24-hour mode of operation, SO2 emission will be ten times lower than it was before, which will enhance the improvement of environmental protection and result in clean air for citizens of Obrenovac and Belgrade said Dušan Živković, Acting General Director of Elektroprivreda Srbije, during his visit to the most important environmental project of EPS with the Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović.

Živković highlighted that the examination and operational reliability test of an absorber in the plant were performed, that the final tests of another absorber were ongoing and that they  would be completed within the following three days. In this way, the conditions for permanent operation and production of TENT A units complying with all environmental protection measures are met. He explained that the technology of flue gas desulphurization wet process was applied, using the limestone as reagent, and having gypsum for a by product which could be used in the building industry.

- This is the largest environmental project in a thermal power plant in Europe, the third largest project in the world for which almost EUR 215 million were allocated said  Dubravka Đedović Handanović, Minister of Mining and Energy. – These types of projects prolong ecological lifetime of the thermal power plants, which is important for production of base energy. Until we build sufficient capacities from renewable energy sources or find some other base energy, we have to rely on thermal capacities complying with the highest environmental standards.

Minister of Mining and Energy mentioned that the construction of the flue gas desulphurization plant in Nikola Tesla B thermal power plant, that would enable around 20 times lower SO2 emissions, would be accomplished the following year.

- In such manner, all environmental measures will be implemented in our thermal power plants that will produce energy according to the highest standards - said Đedović Handanović.

TENT A Desulphurization Plant Project is funded by loan proceeds of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency. The Contractor is a consortium led by Mitsubishi Power Japanese Company, jointly with local Contractor MPP Jedinstvo, Sevojno. Due to operation of this plant, flue gas sulfur oxide and particulate matter emissions will be under 200 milligrams per meter cubic (legally permitted level being 400 mg/m3) and under 20 milligrams per meter cubic (legally permitted level being 50 mg/m3), respectively.
