Sulfur dioxide emissions drastically reduced — by as much as 30 times

Another major investment by “Elektroprivreda Srbije” has been completed, and the flue gas desulfurization plant at the “Nikola Tesla B” thermal power plant is now in trial operation. The ceremonial marking of the completion of construction of this important environmental project was attended by the Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović, the Minister of Environmental Protection Sara Pavkov, Dušan Živković General Director of “Elektroprivreda Srbije,” Acushi Saito Chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Serbia, as well as representatives of “Mitsubishi Heavy Industries” and contractors.
- I am proud that the largest environmental project in this part of Europe has been completed and that our largest thermal capacities now meet all environmental standards, not only domestic, but also European ones. Such plants are already operating successfully in Kostolac B and TENT A, and now, here as well, sulfur dioxide emissions will be drastically reduced by as much as 30 times. In addition, particulate matter emissions are below the prescribed limits. Here in Obrenovac alone, more than 420 million euros have been invested in the construction of the flue gas desulfurization systems at TENT A and TENT B. In this way, we have once again reaffirmed our commitment to modernizing Serbia’s energy sector and aligning it with the highest environmental protection standards. However, what is most important is that in doing so, we are improving air quality not only in Obrenovac, but also in Belgrade and the surrounding areas - said Dubravka Đedović Handanović, Minister of Mining and Energy.
- Today we have once again demonstrated that the responsible application of modern technologies can deliver concrete results in environmental protection. Together, we are setting high standards for what an energy system can and should look like, because our citizens deserve exactly that — an efficient, reliable energy system aligned with all environmental standards - said Sara Pavkov, Minister of Environmental Protection. Dušan Živković, General Director of EPS, emphasized that the investment is worth around 250 million euros and that the facility has been successfully completed in cooperation with Japanese partners and domestic companies.
- The FGD plant is equipped with state of the art technology from renowned manufacturers, using a wet lime flue gas desulfurization process. The byproduct of this process is gypsum, which is already being produced and meets European quality standards. The expected annual gypsum production is around 200.000 tons, strengthening EPS’s capacity in the circular economy. What is especially important for us is that we have extended the operational life and energy efficiency of one of the key pillars of our power system - said Živković.
The ministers, representatives of EPS, the Embassy of Japan, “Mitsubishi Heavy Industries,” and the contractors marked the successful completion of the project by opening a bottle of sake, in line with Japanese tradition
