Preliminary agreement on cooperation for the completion of construction of TPP "Kolubara B"

Public Enterprise "Electric Power Industry of Serbia" has made an important step in ensuring energy independence and security of Serbia in the future, by signing a preliminary agreement on cooperation with China Power at the end  of the construction of the Thermal Power Plant "Kolubara B" in Kalenić, near Ub.

The preliminary agreement was signed by Milorad Grčić, Acting director of PE EPS and Yang Bo, director of the Chinese company "Power China". The construction of TPP "Kolubara B" in Kalenić, near Ub, began in the 80s of the last century, and EPS's plan is to, in cooperation with the Chinese partner, on the basis of an interstate agreement between Serbia and China, complete the construction of that replacement capacity, one unit of about 350 megawatts.

  - I am proud because we managed to start a project that started and stopped in the eighties of the last century, and that is the completion of the construction of the Thermal Power Plant "Kolubara B". Thanks to the vision and political desire of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to modernize, develop and expand EPS in state ownership, we made an overview of what has been started and reached today's signing of the agreement, which is the starting point for the project - Grčić pointed out during the signing of the preliminary agreement in Obrenovac.

The construction of a replacement unit that ensures sustainable industrial development of Serbia in accordance with the latest technologies and environmental protection measures prescribed by the EU will be completed in Kalenić. The unit in Kalenić represents a replacement capacity for TPP "Morava" and TPP "Kolubara A".

   - I thank the Chinese partners for everything they do for Serbia, for everything they do with EPS and for their understanding and patience, because in the next few years many projects will be realized between EPS and Chinese companies - said Grčić and added that the investment for TPP "Kolubara B" will be for a few million euros less in comparison to what had the previous government agreed for the construction of unit B3 in TPP "Kostolac B".

The director of the Chinese company "Power China", Yang Bo, thanked the Government of Serbia and EPS for the given trust and support for the continuation of the construction of TPP "Kolubara B", adding that the company is headed by a world-famous leading engineering group with extensive experience in construction of similar thermal units around the world.

He points out that the company has been present in Serbia for many years and that it has already carried out projects that have influenced the development of the energy sector in our country, stating that they understand the importance of "Kolubara B" for Serbia and the region.

TPP "Kolubara B" will have both primary and secondary measures for reducing the emission of nitrogen oxides, desulphurization system, electrostatic precipitators for reducing the emission of particulate matter, system for reducing mercury and halogen elements, system for wastewater treatment. The completion of the modern and efficient TPP "Kolubara B" enables the utilization of coal, the strongest energy resource that Serbia has, until 2050. The completion of this project is of great importance for the domestic economy as well, since at least 45% of the delivered equipment and works will be reported by the Serbian economy. The plan is for the unit to be connected to the grid by the end of 2024.
