Facing global changes, growing energy demand and decarbonization challenges, Elektroprivreda Srbije has intensified its activities to ensure long-term energy stability and sovereignty of the Republlic of Serbia, said Dušan Živković, General Manager of Elektroprivrede Srbije.

Speaking at the Southeast Europe Energy Conference 2025/2026, he said that security of supply, development of new generation capacities and diversification of energy sources are key to the future of the power system of Serbia.

Referring to the major geopolitical, technological and energy-related changes across the world that are creating growing challenges for power companies, Živković highlighted that, under such circumstances, EPS must simultaneously ensure security of supply, provide sufficient electricity for the needs of Serbia, maintain system resilience and continue the process of decarbonization.

- Elektroprivreda Srbije is moving in the right direction in terms of both the development of its generation portfolio and the improvement of its operations and overall corporate development, which is equally important. We have identified key investment projects to address both current and future challenges. First of all, Bistrica pumped-storage hydropower plant that will together with revitalized Bajina Bašta pumped-storage hydropower plant enable better balancing of the system and create the conditions for a greater integration of renewable energy sources in Serbian power system. Diversification through construction of a gas-fired power plant in cooperation with Azerbaijan is also necessary, as experience has shown that diversification is precisely what provides energy security and stability. There is also a large-scale solar project, along with already launched public invitation for purchase of RES projects, through which we aim to assess the projects currently available on the market, enabling EPS to secure a share of that market and further diversify its portfolio – said Živković.

He said that EPS will continue to strengthen its regional position and cooperation with power companies in the region, while further advancing digitalization through the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

Speaking about the long-term projects for further development of Serbian energy sector, EPS General Manager highlighted Đerdap 3 pumped-storage hydropower plant, noting its significant regional importance due to its capacity and role, as well as strategic ambition for Serbia to have its first nuclear power plant in approximately 15 years, recalling that analyses have already begun under the first phase of the nuclear programme development.
