Construction of the Kostolac wind farm — the first developed by Elektroprivreda Srbije - is entering its final stretch. With an installed capacity of 66 megawatts, the site is now undergoing testing of the connecting switchgear.
“Testing is being carried out by teams from Elektromreža Srbije and represents a necessary prerequisite for grid connection,” said Predrag Đorđević, Project Manager for the Kostolac wind farm. “The first energisation is expected by the end of September, followed by energisation at the substation and across the circuits. According to the project schedule, this will be followed by turbine testing, trial operation of each turbine, and ultimately, commissioning of the entire Kostolac wind farm.”
The Kostolac wind farm spans four locations — Drmno, Petka, Ćirikovac and Klenovnik — and stands out for its innovative use of a depleted mining disposal site, now repurposed as a hub for renewable energy generation. This transformation significantly reduces environmental impact while contributing to Serbia’s energy transition. The wind farm is expected to generate approximately 187 million kilowatt-hours annually — enough to supply around 30,000 households with green electricity.
The project is financed through a €110 million loan from the German Development Bank KfW, alongside €30 million in grant funds from the European Union, channelled via the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). Additional funding is provided by Elektroprivreda Srbije.
This project represents a tangible step towards decarbonisation and sustainable energy development — not only for EPS, but for Serbia’s energy sector as a whole. It also contributes to increasing the share of electricity generated from renewable sources.
